Under general supervision, perform specialized skilled work in the operation of a variety of complex motorized heavy equipment used in the disposal of refuse at the County landfill and other assigned duties of supervisors.  This position is responsible for landfill operations, site preparation, land preservation and drainage control for new and undeveloped landfill areas. This position may require rotating shift to include weekends and Holidays.

Operates equipment such as front-end loader, articulating dump truck, excavator, compactor, bulldozer, scraper and motorized pan to spread, pack and cover refuse and debris and other related tasks

  • Constructs and prepares new and undeveloped areas for future landfill sites including grading, seeding and policing the site for erosion control and beautification purposes
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance of equipment
  • Installs drainage pipes at new and completed sites to insure proper drainage

Must have a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and two years experience in the operation of motorized heavy equipment.

Under very limited supervision, transport and supervise trustees from the Coastal Pre-Release Center and/or Berkeley County Detention Center laborers conducting the cleaning and maintenance of boat landings, landfill, roads and other Authority facilities, and in the performance of other labor functions. This position is responsible for supervising all activities of personnel assigned to Convenience Centers, including prison labor, Vehicle Operators and Solid Waste personnel assigned to outside the landfill clean up duty. This position will coordinate with and follow rules of conduct established and regulated by correctional center. This position may require a rotating shift to include Sundays and Holidays.

  • Supervises all activities regarding prison labor, and landfill personnel assigned to outside the landfill clean up duty, assigns work duties, identifies the work area geographically and functionally, and follows up on results

  • Supervises prison labor and landfill personnel assigned to work the Waste Tire Collection Facility

  • Responsible for the enforcement of safety rules

  • Maintains surveillance of prisoners to prevent them from doing the following: drive vehicles; enter places of business; bodily contacting or talking to persons other than prisoners or supervisors; collecting contraband, to purchasing anything directly or indirectly, using a telephone or going outside the prescribed area of work

  • Responsible for returning prisoners to correctional center when situations arise that are important enough to render a normal day's work ineffective, or at the end of the days work

Under limited supervision operate a vehicle such as a dump truck, garbage truck, flat bed construction truck or straight chassis and tractor-trailers for various road maintenance, collection and related duties. Work originates from the required safe and efficient operation of road maintenance, landfill and sanitation functions requiring vehicle usage.

Assist with the repairs and maintenance of vehicles and heavy equipment. Duties include but are not limited to: Assist with the repairs and maintenance of vehicles and heavy equipment. Duties include but are not limited to: disassembly of diesel and gasoline engines as necessary to inspect, repair, rebuild or replace any or all parts. Repair clutches, transmissions, differentials, compressors, pumps, filter units, blowers, generators, governors, reduction gears, hydraulic systems, braking and steering systems, cooling and electrical systems.

  •  Repair various specialized mechanical and hydraulic equipment, such as crawler tracks and drives, winches, backhoes, long arm hydraulic mowers, garbage compactors, scrapers, bull dozers, roll-off trucks, automobiles, dump trucks and other equipment
  • Remove and install gas and diesel engines in vehicles/heavy equipment
  • Perform minor structural repairs using electric acetylene welding equipment
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance, keeping accurate records of tasks performed
  • Perform steel layout and fabrication, and other duties as assigned by their supervisor

  • Installs water meters, service piping, valves and components associated with the water distribution system
  • Remove and/or replace dirt, water, materials and/or debris from the work site
  • Reads, removes, replaces water meters
  • Handle and mix bags of cement, and maneuver in a wheelbarrow

  • Work on emergency repairs and services with minimal supervision

Under general supervision performs routine duties assisting in the maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment for daily operation of The Solid Waste Management Facility. This individual will be responsible for performing the duties of Convenience Center Operator when that person is on vacation or sick leave and must be able to perform with limited or no supervision. This position reports to the Solid Waste Crew Coordinator in all assigned tasks, and requires a rotating shift to include weekends, Sundays, and Holidays.

Under general supervision, this position is responsible for work at nine different convenience centers throughout Berkeley County, on weekdays, weekends, Sundays and Holidays. This position will not routinely be assigned a permanent position or permanent work hours at one convenience center site. Hours and location will be assigned at the discretion of the supervisor. This position requires cleaning office and maintenance of convenience center grounds.

  • Performs grass cutting using both push and riding lawnmower, trim weeds and shrubs using both manual and power trimmers, sweep, and rake
  • Maintains litter control of buildings as directed
  • Assists in regularly scheduled lubrication and preventive maintenance and minor repair of manual and powered equipment as needed to include powered MSW compactor, mowers, and other tools, vehicles, and machinery assigned to the site

Job Title: Environmental Systems Operator Trainee

Under general supervision, assist the Environmental Systems Operator in the operation of the water and/or wastewater facilities. This position requires the entry and exit of manholes and other confined spaces, and the ability to operate motors, pumps, valves and other specific equipment associated with the treatment process. This position is operates on a rotating shift schedule.

Receives customer complaints over the phone, and coordinates services/repairs with various crews

  • Receives, monitors, and mixes chemicals utilizing a forklift, and load HTH chlorine drums into the back of a standard pickup truck
  • Performs routine maintenance and cleaning tasks with a variety of hand tools for equipment, buildings and grounds
  • Maintains and calibrates testing equipment
  • Collects samples and maintains proper documentation as required by DHEC
  • Records flow, rainfall, and other data, changing charts as required by DHEC
  • Performs visual and auditory inspections of plant equipment and maintain appropriate logs
  • Writes legible and descriptive reports on duties performed
  •   Must progress at least annually to successive Certification levels from Class “D” to Class “A” Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

Must have a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Applicants hired as a “Trainee” must be able to obtain a valid Class “D” Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification within one year. The selected applicant will work closely with senior staff members in order to obtain this certificate. There will be training classes held with study material on a frequent basis on site with some studying expected on his/her own time.
